The Last Love Letter

Todd Black |

Every year I go on a Three Day Silent Retreat based on St. Ignatius of Loyola's Spiritual Exercises.  We go to Mass every morning, pray the Rosary, do the Stations of the Cross and we hear talks throughout the day given by the retreat master (who is a very wise priest).

In silence we can think better and pray better and discern what direction we need to go with our lives. The purpose of the retreat is to create a business plan for my soul.  I reflect on the past year, what went well and what didn't.  I reflect on how I want to improve in humility and charity.  I consider the people in my life that I want to be there for in a special way.

Each year at this retreat, I write a Love Letter to Sugarbaby to be opened in the event of my death.  This is an emotional and difficult exercise for me but it helps me to focus on what is really important.  I tell her what she means to me.  I tell her what I'd want her to know on one the most difficult days in her life.  I'm a Certified Financial Planner, so I also give her a checklist of what to do, who to call, and even a script of what to read to them to make this as easy as possible for her.

This really puts things into perspective for me.  It motivates me.  It helps me to do the things I need to do to achieve our goals.  It also helps us to realize that our goals aren't really about our net worth but about the people that we love and the life we're providing for them.  I hope you find this helpful and encourage you to do it as well.
