Market Update for August 20, 2015

A few days ago we posted a blog post talking about the possibility of a market correction.  We don't know if it's starting now or not, but we are going to see more volatility in the coming months.

Are You Prepared for a Stock Market Correction?

We're six years into a surging bull market in U.S. equity markets. Bull markets usually last five to seven years. The stock market is valued above its historical average.  We're due to have a correction in the stock market.  Will it happen in August, September, or next year?  Nobody knows.

Are You Saving Too Little or Spending Too Much?

I can’t believe how fast time passes.  We’re half past 2015. A minute ago it was Thanksgiving.

Mid-year is a good time to assess our financial progress.  Here are the issue that I look at for our pre-retirees and retired clients:

Nothing Works Out the Way We Think it Will

It's a good idea to plan for the future.  We don't have options later in life unless we plan to have them earlier in life.  But things rarely go according to plan.  The only thing we can count on in life is change.  Sometimes we welcome those changes, and sometimes we don't, but usually things work out for the best.

How Much Does My Portfolio Have to Be Worth to Spend $100,000 Per Year?

This is the "$100,000 question" and we hear it a lot!  Of course the answer is: it depends! Common sources of retirement income include personal savings (401ks), proceeds from the sale of a business, employer pensions and Social Security.

Why is the Stock Market so High if our GDP Declined by 2.9% in the First Quarter?

The US economy in the first quarter showed it's sharpest pullback since the recession, recording a 2.9% contraction in GDP. So why is the stock market still in record territory?

A Primer on the Covered Call and Collar Strategies

For investors who prefer to own stocks in their portfolio, but who need more stability than what stocks typically provide, the covered call and collar strategies offer several advantages.  Both strategies use options to help smooth returns.  In essence, they transform short-term fear, pessimism and volatility in the marketplace into income for an investor by selling away the potential
